Restoration Work Performed

This Peterson System Standard briar pipe represents classic Irish pipe engineering, designed to deliver a cooler, drier smoke through its signature moisture reservoir system. Years of regular use resulted in heavy carbon buildup in the chamber, tar accumulation in the System reservoir, and oxidation on the vulcanite stem.

Despite its worn appearance on arrival, the pipe retained solid structure, clear stamping, and excellent proportions—making it an ideal candidate for a full restoration focused on function, longevity, and preservation of original character.

The restoration began with a full inspection of the bowl, rim, shank, stem, and System reservoir. The chamber was carefully reamed to remove excessive carbon buildup and restore safe wall thickness.

The System reservoir, mortise, and draft channel were deep-cleaned to remove years of moisture and tar accumulation, dramatically improving airflow and smoking performance. The rim was cleaned to remove lava buildup while preserving the pipe’s original profile.

The vulcanite stem underwent oxidation removal and surface refinement, eliminating discoloration and light tooth chatter while retaining its original shape. The stem fit and alignment were corrected to ensure proper System function.

Finally, the briar was polished and treated with a protective wax finish, and the stem was brought to a smooth, glossy finish. The pipe was inspected and confirmed smoke-ready.
