Savinelli Roma – Full Restoration

About the Pipe
This Savinelli Roma briar pipe represents classic Italian pipe design—bold proportions, dependable construction, and a finish designed for everyday smoking. Known for their consistency and comfort, Savinelli pipes are often well-used, and this example was no exception.
When it arrived at our workshop, the bowl showed significant carbon buildup from prolonged use, while the rim displayed darkening and tar accumulation. The shank and draft channel contained residual tars that restricted airflow, and the vulcanite stem exhibited visible oxidation along with light tooth chatter from years of handling.
Despite these cosmetic and functional issues, the pipe retained solid structure, clear stamping, and sound briar—making it an excellent candidate for a full restoration focused on performance, longevity, and respect for the pipe’s original Italian character.

Restoration Work Performed
Each Savinelli restoration is approached with balance—addressing wear and buildup without altering the pipe’s original design intent.
1. Initial Inspection & Evaluation
We began with a full inspection of the bowl, rim, shank, stem, and airway to assess carbon buildup, airflow restriction, and stem condition. The pipe was documented before restoration to ensure all original details were preserved.
2. Bowl Reaming & Chamber Preparation
The chamber was carefully reamed in stages to remove excessive carbon cake and restore safe, even wall thickness. This step helps prevent heat stress and ensures proper combustion during future use.
3. Deep Internal Cleaning
The shank and draft channel were thoroughly cleaned using pipe cleaners and cleaning solutions to remove accumulated tars and residues. This process significantly improves airflow and eliminates sour odors from prolonged use.
4. Rim Cleaning & Surface Care
The rim was cleaned to remove lava and surface buildup while maintaining the pipe’s original shape and edge definition. The bowl exterior was gently cleaned to lift dirt and oils without disturbing the original finish.
5. Stem Oxidation Removal & Refinement
The vulcanite stem underwent oxidation removal to restore its deep black finish. Light tooth chatter was addressed and blended smoothly, preserving the stem’s original profile and comfort. The airway was cleaned to ensure unrestricted airflow.
6. Fit & Function Check
The stem-to-shank fit was checked and adjusted as needed to ensure a snug, comfortable connection without stressing the mortise or tenon.
7. Final Polishing & Protective Finish
The briar was polished and finished with a protective wax coat to enhance depth and durability. The stem was polished to a smooth, glossy finish. A final inspection confirmed the pipe was clean, balanced, and smoke-ready.
Result
The Savinelli Roma was restored to a clean, functional, and reliable smoking pipe—ready for many more years of use while retaining its original Italian identity.
